Consultant at King Abdullah Medical City’s University Medical Centre Participates in Key Regional Conference on Dry Eye

Dr Nada Al Youssef, Consultant in Eye Diseases and Surgery, Cornea and LASIK at the University Medical Centre in King Abdullah Medical City, represented the Kingdom of Bahrain at the first Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Society (DEOSS) Congress held recently in Cairo.

The event aimed to review and update the standards for diagnosing and treating dry eyes, as well as develop scientific research and clinical and academic studies related to dry eyes in various eye centres and hospitals in the Middle East and the GCC. Dr Al Youssef was selected to participate in the prestigious congress due to her vast expertise and long experience in the field of ophthalmology.

Commenting on the occasion, she stated: “Dry eyes are one of the most prevalent diseases in the GCC and the Middle East regions, with a prevalence ranging from 40 to 60 percent. The condition affects individuals across all age groups, including children, youth and adults.”

“Dry eye has significant implications for eye health, as dry eye is defined as a lack of moisture or natural fluids inside the eye, leading to feelings of dryness, itching, and redness, as well as reduced visual acuity. Diagnosing dry eye typically requires a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s symptoms and medical history, as well as performing certain tests to evaluate the function and health of the eye,” Dr Al Youssef added.
